Hekla Combo: Stainless steel perfection to last a lifetime

I did not know what to expect when I received the box. It went from wow! To totally amazed at the quality of the fireplace. You can see the quality and care building them. It's easy to set up or put away, saves a lot of space because of the design. Works great, easily adjustable flame, and looks so good. The only minor improvement would be to use better zippers on the bag, but otherwise, we love it.

TLDR: The team at Lavabox not only makes an awesome product in their Hekla combo, but their customer service is among the best I have ever experienced. Massive thanks to the Lavabox team, we love our Hekla!

I purchased my Hekla just before Thanksgiving and have had nothing but positive experiences with the folks at Lavabox; purchase was very easy and was shipped quickly. The combo arrived the day before Thanksgiving, and I was excited to try it that night, the system is very easy to set up, but I was disappointed at the height of the flame as it seemed very low compared to photos and reviews I had seen.

I sent a note to the team at Lavabox that night expecting I would hear back sometime the following week, but my experience truly surprised me. I received an email from Syotr on their staff Thanksgiving morning, as well as confirmation that a new regulator had been shipped to help fix the fire height issue. This team goes the extra mile to ensure that people love their purchases and it really shows. Moreover, the range and heat that the Hekla puts off for such a small piece of equipment is incredible. My wife and I use the firepit regularly and she has now freely admitted that, “it is the single best piece of camping equipment,” that I have ever purchased. Safe to say, there is no higher praise than that.

I’ve been using the Lavabox portable camp fire for a while now, and it has easily become one of my favorite pieces of outdoor gear. The build quality is excellent — solid, durable, and clearly designed for real outdoor use. It lights up quickly and produces a clean, consistent flame without the usual mess and smoke of traditional campfires.

Heat output is impressive for its size. It keeps you warm on cold nights and works perfectly for cooking or just creating a cozy camp atmosphere. The portability is another huge plus: it packs down small and is light enough to carry anywhere, whether you’re camping, overlanding, or just having a quick fire in the backyard.

Last May I waited with anticipation for my Howl R1 to be delivered. It finally arrived, I took it out in the backyard and fired it up. Pretty cool. Couldn’t wait to get it out on my Hell’s Canyon trip in August. Fast-forward to August and a buddy of mine on the trip had just purchased a Lava Box. First night of the trip I brought out the Howl, looking forward to dazzling everybody with the flame. My buddy brought out his Lava Box as well and placed it next to the Howl. After he fired up the Lava Box, I stood up out of my chair, walked over to the Howl, shut it down and put it away for the rest of the trip. When I got home, I immediately put the Howl on Facebook marketplace and sold it, and immediately placed an order for the Lava Box. This thing is impressive to say the least, and the quality and workmanship is top-notch. Do yourself a favor and don’t waste your money on a Howl or any other ammo can fire pit. Get the Lava Box, it won’t disappoint.
