5 Ways You Can Help Heal Colorado’s Waterways This Summer

Access to fresh water in the West is a hot topic and often a contentious issue.

To dam or not to dam? What are reasonable water restrictions? Should water from the Colorado River go to California? And when the hell are you allowed to water your lawn?

There’s a lot up for discussion and, if you’ve lived in the western United States for any amount of time, you’ve likely heard it all. One thing that IS widely agreed upon? Freshwater in the West is a precious resource.

As humans who drink, recreate on, and rely on said freshwater, it’s our responsibility to be good stewards of the watersheds, rivers, and riparian ecosystems that provide this sparking respite.

Protect Our Rivers Is Fighting The Good Fight to Save Our Waterways. We’re Onboard!

Have you met our friends over at Protect Our Rivers yet?

If you haven’t, you can learn more about Protect Our Rivers and Project Little Bird here. Protect Our Rivers is our partner nonprofit organization. Just like LavaBox, Protect Our Rivers was “born on the river” and is founded on the drive to safeguard our natural lands and resources.

(Want to learn more about the crossroads of wildfire prevention and protecting riparian ecosystems? Check out our previous blog post: Wildfires Are Damaging Rivers in Ways You May Never Have Realized.)

By partnering with Protect Our Rivers, we’ve pledged $1 of every LavaBox Portable Campfire sale we make directly to their efforts. Even more so, we like to stick our hands in the mud and get down and dirty. We’re all hands on deck for this cause — pledging our time, service, and commitment to help Protect Our Rivers however possible.

You’ll find the LavaBox crew at a handful of Protect Our Rivers events and cleanups throughout the summer and fall this year. And you’re invited too!

POR events aren’t just charity cleanups. They’re a dang good time and a fun way to spend a day meeting your local community, cracking some beers from Odell Brewing Co, and doing GOOD.

Need another reason to celebrate? This past month, Governor Jared Polis signed a decree to officially deem June 22 National Protect Our Rivers Day! That’s right folks, there’s a new holiday in town.

Protect Our Rivers celebrated the first annual National Protect Our Rivers Day by hosting its first river cleanup on Big Thompson River, a tributary of the South Platte River. Keep an eye out for future celebrations and cleanups as we join POR in helping to celebrate our new favorite holiday (that’s also coincidentally our Chief Fire Officer, Josh’s, birthday as well!).
